ART SPECIAL – A Workshop in the Context of VULTURES & FIREFLIES exhibition

Some stories cannot be captured in words. They live in our bodies, in our movements, in sounds, and in the objects around us. What happens when we learn to listen to the silent stories hidden within these things? And when words fall short, what other ways can we use to share our stories?

During this workshop, we will explore the works of Alejandro Galván. The artist lives in Nezahualcóyotl, a suburb of Mexico City, where political neglect and violence have shaped the social landscape. His often highly detailed paintings blend realism with mythology, reflecting his experiences growing up in this environment and addressing the corruption of the Mexican state and police. Together, we will examine the themes and symbols embedded in his paintings and discover how these tell stories that transcend borders—between countries, cultures, and even time itself.

Then, it’s time for you to tell your own stories! You’ll be invited to express yourself through movement, sound, scent, and tactile materials. We will reflect on questions such as: How can a thought or feeling be conveyed without words? What stories are embedded in the objects, scents, and sounds around us? Through various thought, action, and creative exercises, you’ll experience the power of the body and objects as vessels of storytelling and discover how your personal experiences connect to broader, universal themes.

This afternoon at Marres (Capucijnenstraat 98 in Maastricht) will be a wonderful opportunity to explore your creative side, get to know yourself a little better, and make inspiring connections with other NOAHs. We look forward to seeing you there!

The workshop will be for free for our NOAH members and we’ll offer it in English and Dutch (at the same time).
